Canadian government mandates porn must be ‘more Canadian’

Because Canada is such a small country in every way except land mass compared to America, we have serious and legitimate concerns over “American culture” eclipsing Canadian culture (and good luck defining that). So the government, in its Infinite Wisdom and in the form of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), stepped in many years ago and mandated, among other things, that TV programming must be at least “35% Canadian content”.

As it turns out – that includes porn, too.

My TwitterFriend Diane Patterson pointed me to this story.

Death and Taxes:

The Toronto Sun reports that Wednesday the CRTC posted an advisory to its site that a group of pornographic TV channels owned by Toronto-based Channel Zero including AOV Adult Movie Channel and AOV XXX Action Clips violate the “35% Canadian” rule. They’re going to need to step it up and find a way to make this porn “more Canadian.”

Does the government really believe that it’s time to step up the production of porn in Canada?

The other great quote in the article is:

CRTC also notes that the the channels are falling short of the requirement to have at least 90% of dialogue closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

I almost spewed coffee over my keyboard reading that.
